Indigo
Girls - Despite Our Differences
- - -
20 years after they
began releasing records as Indigo Girls, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers
have politely declined the opportunity to mellow with age.
You could just say
it's just not in their constitution. Devoted environmental and social
justice activists and lifelong music-industry mavericks, the Girls
have spent their entire career pushing boundaries on a variety of
fronts. Why stop now?
Both Saliers and Ray
agree that Despite Our Differences, the
10th Indigo Girls studio album, is a record defined
by change and newness.
The result of that
experimentation: perhaps the freshest-sounding album in the Indigos'
ample discography. Differences pulses with warm acoustic
guitars, crisp, tasty keyboards (playing by Froom and longtime band
member Carol Isaacs), and, of course, the singers' trademark intertwined
vocals.
Guest appearances
from two Indigo Girls fans, Brandi Carlile and
Pink (returning the
favor the Girls did her when they performed and sang on "Dear
Mr. President" from Pink's album I'm Not Dead),
"inject the record with this inspiring energy,"
Saliers says.
The tunes on Differences
are certainly a batch worthy of that effort. Plainspoken yet rich
with literary detail, they address the growing unrest in the world,
as well as the smaller push-and-pull that takes place every day
between two people.
Opener "Pendulum
Swinger" takes on institutional sexism and what the Girls
view as President Bush's wrongheaded approach to the war on terrorism.
"Even though
it's a pop song," Saliers acknowledges, "it's
saying you're not gonna win this with a bullwhip or posing with
your hands on your hips like Mr. Tough-Guy President. The only way
to stop this madness is through love. That's a simple sentiment,
but I believe it at my core."
"I Believe
in Love," a gorgeous folk-soul lullaby, proves the
point with its message of tolerance and the necessity of understanding
"despite our differences".
In "Little
Perennials," the album's lively lead single, Ray describes
"getting something for all this love's labor"
over a throbbing backbeat embroidered with strummy fuzz-roots guitars
and swirling, helium-high keyboards.
"I think it's
remarkable that Amy's life and my life coincided like this,"
Saliers says, "that we've been able to make music and stay
dear friends through all these years." Ray echoes her
bandmate.
"I remind
myself that we've been together for such a long time and that we're
lucky to still be together," she laughs.
Though she admits she's
not one for making a big fuss over a milestone like the Indigos'
20th anniversary of record-making, Ray says this new chapter
in the band's career does reaffirm the principal that's always driven
the duo.
"It's all
about living in the moment that you're in and trying to make it
better than the moment that came before," she explains,
pointing for example to the band's ongoing work with Honor the Earth,
a Minneapolis-based non-profit dedicated to energy justice within
the Native American community.
"We just
want to keep evolving - there isn't a point where that doesn't apply."

October,
the tenth month of the current Gregorian calendar and the
second month of Autumn's rule, derives it's name from
Octo, the Latin word meaning
"eight", as October was
the eighth month of the old Roman
calendar.
The
traditional birthstone amulets of
October are opal,
rose sapphire,
and tourmaline; and the
calendula is the month's
traditional flower.
October
is shared by the astrological signs
of Libra the Scales (or
balance) and Scorpio
the Scorpion, and is sacred to the following Pagan deities:
Cernunnos, Hecate, the Morrigan, Osiris,
and the Wiccan Goddess in Her dark aspect
as the Crone.
During
the month of October, the Great Solar Wheel of the Year is
turned into Halloween
(Samhain Eve), one of the four Grand Sabbats celebrated
each year by Wiccans and modern Witches throughout the world

KD
Lang duets with Madeleine Peyroux...

Jazz-café
crooner Madeleine Peyroux to do a duet with chanteuse extraordinaire
k.d. lang.
Adding to the challenge
was that they were recording a Joni Mitchell song
with Larry Klein, who used to be Mitchell's husband, producer and
bass player.
"Even down to the last
minute of being in studio with Larry and k.d., there were questions
of how to make it work," said the Georgia-born, Paris-bred
cult figure.
"I was confident that k.d.
had a real grasp of Joni Mitchell and would be leading the way for
me, to a certain degree. She did. She showed me a lot of things
because I sang both before and after she did her part."
She'd never even tried to cover
a Mitchell song. But she wanted to do a duet with a woman
("it's hard to find duets that make sense for two women,"
she says) and Klein suggested "River"
from her "Blue" album.
The duet is one of the highlights
on Peyroux's "Half the Perfect World,"
which was released in August.

November,
the eleventh month of the current Gregorian calendar
and the third month of Autumn's rule, derives its name
from novem, the Latin
word meaning "nine", as November was the
ninth month of the old Roman calendar.
The
traditional birthstone amulet of
November is the topaz;
and the chrysanthemum
is the month's traditional flower.
November
is shared by the astrological signs of Scorpio
the Scorpion and Sagittarius
the Centaur-Archer, and is sacred to the following
Pagan deities: Astarte, Calleach, Hathor,
Kali, Marman, and Sekhmet.

Melissa
Etheridge's partner is expecting twins
Melissa
Etheridge's partner, Tammy Lynn Michaels, is pregnant with twins,
the couple has announced on the singer's website.
"We
are thrilled to announce that Tammy is pregnant, and expecting
our twins sometime around this fall," they said in a
statement.
"To
answer the obvious question: we used an anonymous donor from a
(sperm) bank."
Etheridge,
44, and Michaels, 31, held a commitment ceremony
in 2003.
The
Grammy-winning singer has two children from her relationship with
former partner Julie Cypher: daughter Bailey Jean and son Beckett.
Cypher
had the children through artificial insemination using a sperm
donation from rock legend David Crosby.
In
the announcement, Etheridge and Michaels said: "The twins
will be a joyful addition to our loving home. We are a blessed
family."
Etheridge
was diagnosed with breast cancer
in 2004, but is now cancer-free.
She
last released a greatest hits album titled, The
Road Less Travelled.
